Millennials leading the Digital Revolution

Welcome to the Digital Revolution!

The 8-hour work in an office is becoming a thing of the past. Many people have left their jobs because they felt they were puppets in the corporate world. Nowadays working more no longer means more productivity. Companies are seeking ‘knowledge work’ and are willing to give responsibility and freedom to their workers in exchange for productivity and quality of work. This is the foundation of this Digital Revolution!

A multi-million dollar company, Buffer, based in San Francisco, California, closed down their office and went a full remote-mode in 2015. Buffer has an incredible disperse team that works from around the world.

Who wouldn’t like to have the means to earn a living online while checking off points on the bucket list??

This Internet age has created a huge workforce of “digital nomads”. A (fast) growing community of people who live a location-independent lifestyle, working from coffee shops and beach chairs all over the world. And who is loving and perfectly adapting to this Digital Era? That’s right… Us, Millennials!

We are aware that this Digital Revolution is not only allowing us to live the life we always dreamed of, but it also has a huge impact on the world we live in and the places we pass through. We’ll cover that later.

But… Who are the Millennials?

The Millennial generation, or Generation Y, are those who were born approximately between the early 1980s and early 2000s. Born in the middle of big technological changes in the world, some say, Millennials are spoiled, narcissistic, selfish, and lazy. Well, while we agree there is some truth to it, we believe Millennials are an entire generation of open-minded, fearless, and super-ambitious humans ready to make a huge impact in the world.

The majority of Millennials have a whole new concept of richness. They (Well… We!) prefer freedom over money. Access over ownership. We rather collect experiences than physical goods. We collect stamps on passports instead of buying a new car or an apartment (We sold our car for this haha). A generation much slower to marry and to move out on our own.

A generation of non-conformists and dreamers. We hate the idea of a 9-5 job or settling down to start a family in the 20s.  Instead, we want to explore the world, experience new cultures, meet different people, eat new food, etc.  There is a big bucket list, and this digital era allows us to put a “check” on anything we can imagine. There is no time for boredom.

And… What is a Digital Nomad?

The ‘Digital Nomad’ concept was born in 1997 and it is not a job title, but a lifestyle choice. An option that is becoming more and more available to everyone thanks to this digital age that is also changing the balance between life and career.  From singles to families with kids, from young to older people, there is space for everyone!

Millennials embracing the Digital Revolution

Digital Nomads are hard-working professionals, freelancers, and entrepreneurs who embraced technology and designed their lives to be location-independent. They are as mobile as they wish and able to earn a living from any location with a decent wi-fi connection. According to this infographic, the majority of Digital Nomads visit 5-10 countries per year staying between 1-3 months in each place.

The internet allows companies to integrate the concept of an e-office having a completely new type of worker. As a result, the working environment is very different, attending team meetings, events, or conferences all online. Communication can be done through simple Skype calls or through platforms such as Asana or Slack.

According to Global Workplace Analytics, remote work greatly improves employee satisfaction and productivity.

Companies that turned totally or partially digital, allow their teams or employees to work from any comfortable workspace in the world and in their most productive time of the day. Plus, it reduces the rental costs of a physical office at the same time. If this isn’t the digital revolution, we don’t know what this is!

It has never been easier to live and work as a Digital Nomad. Traveling the world, experiencing new cultures, and meeting different kinds of people are inspiring, enriching, and cheap (usually cheaper than living in developed cities). Plus, you can find affordable and decent accommodation and reliable internet pretty much everywhere. On top of that, you can enjoy any type of nature after hours of work on your laptop.

Although don’t believe in someone who tells you that Digital Nomadism is only roses and wine, it is just not true. This lifestyle is many times lonely, hard to turn off from work, and is a constant battle against distractions of every kind. But… Nothing is perfect, right?

Why the Digital Revolution?

We might have quit our jobs… We might have left everything behind and followed a completely different path than what society had prepared for us. But, in the end, Millennials cannot be judged. We can’t be judged for having the dream of freedom and the rational desire to have a better lifestyle for less money and living with not much more than our laptops and some essentials.

Being connected online, anywhere you go, is something characteristic of modern times. Millennials are using this opportunity to the max and have fallen in love with the ‘bleisure’ (business + leisure) travel.

This Digital Era is also allowing everyone to have endless opportunities on the internet, and is destroying the need to go to big cities for a job, which brings tremendous environmental advantages!
